The first opportunity is with the US Forest Service which
has recognized its old management plan for the Superior
National Forest would have eliminated 86 percent of the
remaining white pines on Superior National Forest
timberlands. They're revising the plan, but they're under
pressure from industry to cut more white pines rather than
fewer because industry is running out of them. It's
important that the US Forest Service and your congressional
representatives hear from the public, too. The more they
hear, the better the new plan will be for white pines. The
plan will cover both national forests in Minnesota-the
Superior National Forest and the Chippewa National Forest,
and these forests include some of the largest stands of
white pines remaining in Minnesota. |
