No one knew yet that natural ground fire actually
helps
white pines reproduce. The fire burns up leaf litter and
underbrush on the forest floor while the mature white pines
are protected by their thick bark. The fire creates ideal
conditions for the next crop of white pine seeds to take
root and survive.
